Smoke, Storms & Shores: Navigating Islay’s Peat Elements at the Hong Kong Jockey Club

We returned to the exclusive E105 Lounge at the Hong Kong Jockey Club for a high-energy masterclass dedicated to Scotland's most dramatic spirit landscape: "Scotch Whisky Journey - Islay." Surrounded by live racing screens, the evening explored the untamed, maritime alchemy of an island shaped by Atlantic gales, deep peat bogs, and intense coastal maturation.
Rather than defining Islay simply as "smoky," our presentation dissected how local terroir, heavy phenolic specifications, and unexpected cask balancing create completely contrasting profiles on the exact same island coastline.
Here is how our dual-bottle heavy-peat flight challenged and delighted the HKJC members:
1. Lagavulin 11 Year Old "Offerman Edition" (Caribbean Rum Cask Finish, 46% ABV)
The Profile: Sweet, campfire-smoke-infused, and tropical.
The Experience: We launched our coastal flight with a limited release that brilliantly bridges intensive medicinal smoke with vibrant warmth. Crafted in partnership with actor Nick Offerman, this rare 11-year-old single malt takes Lagavulin’s iconic, slow-distilled coastal spirit and gives it an exotic final maturation inside sweet Caribbean rum casks. On the nose, members immediately noted an unexpected harmony of pungent maritime peat smoke, seaside brine, and warm holiday spices, beautifully lifted by brown sugar, vanilla, and dried tropical fruits. The finish lingered long with a sweet, smoldering campfire ash.
2. Port Charlotte "Islay Barley 2012" (Heavily Peated, 50% ABV)
The Profile: Industrial, robustly peated, and deeply cereal-forward.
The Experience: For our second pour, we moved to the Rhinns of Islay to showcase the power of localized agriculture. Produced by Bruichladdich Distillery, Port Charlotte is peated to a massive 40 PPM (Phenol Parts Per Million). What makes this specific 2012 vintage extraordinary is that it is distilled entirely from barley grown on eight local Islay farms. Bottled at a powerful 50% ABV, it flooded the lounge with aromas of clean, intense peat smoke, heavy malted biscuits, fresh vanilla pods, and charred oak. The high proof amplified a wonderfully oily, waxy weight on the palate, perfectly balanced by a distinct wave of briny sea air.
The excitement inside the lounge was palpable as members mapped out their track selections while contrasting the sweet, tropical smoke of the Lagavulin against the raw, muscular, farm-to-bottle power of the Port Charlotte. The session proved that when it comes to heavily peated malts, the magic lies in how each distillery commands the elements.
